Olympia is the capitol of Washington State and is named for its view of the Olympic Mountains in the northwest. Located on the southernmost section of Puget Sound, the area has been home to indigenous Americans for thousands of years and was not visited by Europeans until 1792. In 1846 the land that became downtown was claimed by Edmund Sylvester and Levi Smith, then in 1859 Olympia was incorporated.
