Ross Island was formed by four volcanoes in the Ross Sea near McMurdo Sound. Two of the volcanoes, Erebus and Terror, were named by Captain James Ross for his expedition ships, the HMS Erebus and the HMS Terror. The island's icy shores are home to several penguin rookeries, and are surrounded by rich waters. Ross Island is one of the last pristine ocean habitats in the world, with many species of fish, seals, and whales making their home in the area.
