Backed by the high Admirality Mountains on the north end of Borchgrevink Coast, Cape Adare was once an important landing site for early Antarctic exploration. Carsten Borchgrevink and his 1899 Norwegian expedition team erected two prefabricated huts upon their arrival to Cape Adare, both of which are still standing today. The location of the huts is recognized internationally as an important historic site, and as such, is registered as an Antarctic Specially Protected Area. Visitors will also find one of the largest Adelie penguin colonies in the world.
